Eligible Pharr residents who use the city's internet service can get their bill fully reimbursed. 

Pharr leaders recently partnered with the Federal Communications Commission through its $14.8 billion affordable connectivity program.

"As we're coming out of the pandemic a little bit more, we're seeing that internet services continues to be a necessity for families everywhere and the price of it shouldn't keep families offline," said Paloma Perez with the Federal Communications Commission.

Data from a state non-profit shows before the pandemic, only 68% of Texans were subscribed to broadband service. While internet service has become vital, it can still be unaffordable for some households.

The federally funded FCC program gives qualifying households a $30 discount each month, which covers the total cost of Pharr's $25 service.

If you don't use Pharr's internet service or don't live in Pharr, the federal program is open to a list of other Texas providers. There are eligibility standards based on income and other qualifying factors.

"If you have someone in your household who qualifies for a Pell grant, anybody doing free or reduced lunch," Perez said. 'Also would qualify, Medicaid or snap."

"Right now we really want to encourage parents to get in contact with their PEIMS clerk or secretary with their school district," City of Pharr employee Yuri Gonzalez said. "This is going to be your best point of contact, they already know and are aware about the ACP program. It's a couple of questions and most parents say that it is a fast process."
