WESLACO – Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced Wednesday the creation of a new taskforce in the wake of the El Paso mass shooting.

The shooting claimed the lives of 22 people after a gunman who targeted Hispanics opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso.

Abbott announced the establishment of a domestic terrorism taskforce.

The force will be made up of a group of experts who will study emergent threats and develop strategies to prevent and respond to those threats.

Hidalgo County Sheriff Eddie Guerra is part of the team; he's the only Texas sheriff to be appointed to the group.

“Serving in this capacity will not only help to provide insight to the task force by sharing our expertise and experience as a border community, but also help to bring back and implement valuable best practices, shared knowledge, and effective models that will help us keep Hidalgo County safe from these types of threats,” Guerra said in a statement.

Their first meeting is scheduled for the end of the month.
