As the number of positive COVID-19 cases remains substantial across the Valley, health experts are weighing in on different treatments for the virus.

Infectious Disease Expert for the Mayo Clinic Dr. Raymund Razonable says as therapies continue to evolve, depending on a patient's clinical condition and risk factors, they could be eligible for treatment with monoclonal antibodies.

Hidalgo County Health Authority Dr. Ivan Melendez says the antibody treatment is working to keep patients out of the hospital but says he hopes other forms of treatment will soon be available.

"Finally, we are starting to use some of the anti-arthritic medication," Melendez said.  "Which are anti-inflammatory medications that are still under trial."

Still, Melendez says the best way to keep the virus from taking over is to avoid contracting it in the first place.

"Treatments for COVID-19 in the Valley can be divided into three phases," Melendez said. "The pre infectious phase, which is of course mitigation and avoidance of the disease."

Hidalgo's top health experts add that everyone should continue to wear a mask, social distance, and get vaccinated.
