HIDALGO – Police say one person was arrested after they foiled a smuggling attempt in Hidalgo.

The bust happened near the port of entry along a levee wall Tuesday night.

Hidalgo Police Chief Rudy Espinoza says they responded to a call of people carrying carjacks. He says upon arrival, officers spotted some suspicious activity near a drainage opening.

Espinoza says the smugglers attempted to move 800 pounds of marijuana under the levee wall and through a valve system.

The police chief explains the drugs were being loaded through the grates of a manhole into a truck at a parking lot on the U.S. side

Police and Border Patrol agents recovered the bundles from a truck and from inside the drainage channel.
