MCALLEN – The city of McAllen is agreeing to help fund the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley medical school in a four to two vote.

On Monday, city commissioners agreed to give the school $1 million.

The money has been set aside by the city for the 2016-2017 fiscal budget as part of the development cooperation fund.

Not everyone was for the motion.

Those against it argued with the city facing a drop in sales revenue, they should hold onto the money in case it’s needed in the future.

Those for it said the city already made a commitment to the school and that it would be a good investment.

After the vote, UTRGV President Guy Bailey spoke with CHANNEL 5 NEWS what the university plans to use the $1 million for.

“Our most and important and largest facility is going up right now in the city of McAllen. And this money will help us hire the faculty and the researchers that will go in that facility,” said Bailey.

Bailey said the reason the money is needed is because the state reduced their budget by about $24 million. Most of what was reduced was from the medical school.

So far McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr and Hidalgo County have given money to UTRGV’s School of Medicine.
