The McAllen Police Department confirmed that a homeless man in a wheelchair was beaten in broad daylight last month.

The assault happened on north 10th Street when Michael Wright was beaten with a 2 by 4. He was taken to the hospital after the incident, where he later died.

Friends of Wright say this was unnecessary and heartbreaking.

"I would go sit with Michael and have lunch with him there on the street, and he was just a ball of knowledge, talked about anything and everything,” Rick Aguirre of Emily’s Meals of McAllen said. “People have this stigma toward about a homeless person, but they're just people like you and I. They're someone's father brother, mother uncle."

Records show that Gregorio Garza, 58, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault in connection with Wright’s death.

Garza remains in jail on a $100,000 bond.
