SAN BENITO – Millions of dollars were nearly stolen by online hackers from a Rio Grande Valley School District.

Nearly a million San Benito school dollars were stolen when an identical replica to the district’s bank website was created and sent to employees.

Frost Bank’s Fraud Department immediately stopped multiple wire transfers headed to different countries.

The U.S. Secret Service also seized nearly $300,000 that will be returned to the district.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to cyber expert Michael Leal about how these hackers work.

“Just be vigilant you know don't click on anything you see just because it’s on your email it doesn't guarantee that it’s safe... You have to look before you leap," says Leal.
