BROWNSVILLE – Drivers that use or plan to use Toll Road 550 have a new option to pay for using the state highway.

The Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority is now allowing drivers to “use now and pay later” by having them register their vehicle online.

Instead of buying a prepaid tag for the car, the online registry allows the toll system to bill drivers, using their registered license plates at the end of the month.

Toll Road 550 takes drivers to the Port of Brownsville. It also connects to Highway 48, which leads to Port Isabel.

Drivers usually have 30 days to pay for a toll road violation or face a $15 administrative fee. Those fees continue to increase as time passes.

Violators could also face prosecution.
