Property tax exemptions for certain childcare centers are on the November ballot for voters to decide on.

It would give child daycare centers like Little Shining Star Daycare a tax break, putting more money back into their pockets.

Money, the owner Martha Guillon says, could go a long way, especially now since the development center has been experiencing a drop in enrollment.

There are 170 kids in the center's care this year, which is 70 children less than last year.

Fewer children mean less revenue for the center. A financial hit, Guillon says, could be less of a burden if Proposition 2 is passed.

"Proposition 2 would help the childcare industry a lot to help us stay open," Guillon said.

Proposition 2 would give certain child centers a property tax exemption of at least 50 percent. To qualify, childcare centers must be a part of the Texas Workforce Commissions' Rising Star program.

"At least 20 percent of the children enrolled in daycare centers are receiving subsidized child care services through the Texas Workforce Commission," University of Texas San Antonio Political Science Professor Jon Taylor said.

Opponents of the proposition argue the revenue lost from the tax exemption would have to be made up elsewhere.

"Primarily, general revenues for cities it might potentially, potentially reduce the amount of money for the tax base for the city or county," Taylor said.

He says the best way to help voters decide how to vote is to look at up a sample ballot before hitting the polls and do your research.
