MISSION – U.S. Border Patrol is encouraging Rio Grande Valley landowners along the border to watch out for intruders.

The federal agency says the caravan of people seeking asylum that’s headed toward the Texas-Mexico border, with an unknown destination, will attract the attention of others.

In a statement sent out Thursday afternoon, Border Patrol says media groups, and possibly armed civilians, will be trying to access people’s land without permission.

There has been no collaboration or coordination by the Border Patrol to encourage private citizens to arm themselves and come to the border. No one at CBP, including the Border Patrol, endorses this activity. The intent of the email sent by one of the Border Patrol Landowner Liaison’s was to provide the landowners within that specific area of responsibility a point of contact in case they encounter media or any unauthorized individuals on their respective properties. There have been instances where these situations have occurred in the past and this was merely a proactive effort to inform stakeholders with property along the immediate border.

The mission of the Border Community Liaison Program is to facilitate the exchange of information between the Rio Grande Valley Sector and the community to advance operational effectiveness and coordinate our shared interests with the community to preserve national security. In support of this goal, each Border Patrol station has assigned representatives maintain positive relationships with landowners to foster communication and transparency regarding border security issues.

KRGV’s Christian von Preysing spoke with several property owners about the agency’s efforts.
