SAN BENITO – A curfew ordinance for kids under the age of 17 was reinstated in one Rio Grande Valley city.

It could cost parents if their children are caught breaking the law.

San Benito City Commissioners say it's important for public health and safety.

Sunday through Thursday, curfew is 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. unless you're working or with a parent.

On Fridays and Saturdays, it's stretched to 11:30 p.m.

Curfews can be a tool for law enforcement to get minors who wander the streets, home.

City commissioners say there's an uptick in juvenile violence and participation in organized criminal gang activity and crime committed by kids under the age of 17.

Some agree with parental set curfew's, but not when they're enforced by the law. 

After warnings, teens breaking curfew could face $500 fines and juvenile court.

Parents and public establishments can also be slapped with $500 fines.
