San Benito woman accused of throwing 5-year-old girl to the floor during argument
A 22-year-old San Benito woman is behind bars after throwing her 5-year-old relative to the floor and shaking her when deputies arrived, according to the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office.
Destiny Marie Navarro is also accused of kicking and striking the deputies who responded to the scene, according to a news release.
Deputies with the sheriff’s office responded to the 17000 block of FM 800 in San Benito Sunday at around 11 a.m. after the victim’s mother reported the assault.
According to the news release, the victim’s mother said her niece — identified as Navarro — was holding on to the 5-year-old girl as Navarro argued with her grandmother.
“The victim’s mother reported Ms. Navarro threw the victim towards the floor, causing the victim to hit her head and back area on the living room floor,” the release added.
When deputies arrived, Navarro was still holding on to the girl.
“Navarro then began to shake the victim, causing the victim's head to move back and forth, potentially causing further injury,” the release stated. “Deputies intervened by physically removing the victim from Ms. Navarro’s grasp. Ms. Navarro then proceeded to strike and kick the deputies multiple times, causing minor injuries.”
Navarro was arrested after an investigation revealed she had an active warrant on a family violence charge. She was placed in custody on charges of injury to a child, continuous family violence and assault of a public servant.
She remains in custody pending her arraignment.
