WESLACO – Some federal employees say they were worried about missing payments due to the shutdown.

Cameron County Tax Assessor, Tony Yzaguirre, said the office received a lot of calls prior to the government re-opening.

Yzaguirre taxes were due on Jan. 31 and the next tax deadline isn’t until June.

"I would tell the individuals to pay their taxes. Or, we would put them in a payment plan and come up with a payment. A monthly-payment, and of course the system does have penalties," he says.

Yzaguirre adds his office proposed adding a new office in Brownsville to give Cameron County taxpayers as many options as possible to avoid delinquency.
