If you’ve started grocery shopping for Thanksgiving, you may have noticed ingredients are more expensive this year.

The American Farm Bureau Federation found that the average cost of Thanksgiving meal items has gone up in price by 20% compared to last year.

That increase is especially true for one Thanksgiving staple — the turkey.

“Last year I believe we were paying something like 69 cents a pound versus this year’s price of 90 something cents a pound, so it's a huge difference,” Vera’s Kink O Meats supervisor Zeke Moralez said.

The prices have shoppers like Marcelina Rangel rethinking her Thanksgiving plans.

“I'm still not sure if I'm going to buy food for Thanksgiving because the economy is really bad — at least not turkey,” Rangel said. “Maybe we do something more affordable so we can buy enough food.”

Tobie Stanger, senior editor for Consumer Reports, says Thanksgiving promotions have started — meaning groceries prices currently cheaper than they were a couple of weeks ago.

“Right now, right before Thanksgiving, is a very good time to get a promotion on a turkey and not pay a lot of money,” Stanger said.

Stanger also recommends buying store brand products which tend to be cheaper, as well as, cutting back on unnecessary ingredients.

“Your guests will not notice or care if you left out an expensive sausage from the stuffing or chestnuts or oysters,” Stanger said. “You don't need to do that, you can go very simply."

Consumer Reports say you also should shop around and look at the prices at different stores to compare the price per pound on items to choose the one that gives you the best bang for your buck.
