TxDOT, City of Roma Find Solution to Deter Illegal Activity near Border
ROMA – The city of Roma says they have finally found a solution to some illegal activity in their community.
A few weeks ago, Roma’s police and fire departments rescued two people who crossed the border illegally, along with two Border Patrol agents, from a storm drain.
KRGV’s Trason Bragg spoke with the assistant city manager who says the city has been concerned with this issue.
"Whenever it does happen, it's very resource consuming. A lot of man hours go into rescuing people who get stuck in these drainage systems,” says Guerra.
Guerra explains the city contacted the Texas Department of Transportation, which owns the storm drains that run under Highway 83, and the agency placed a custom-designed grate over the opening of the storm drain.
TxDOT says the grate was custom-made to prevent debris buildup and avoid flooding.
