Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz brought the group on a tour of the border where they said they encountered groups of immigrants.

The group said the problem is worse now with the number of people crossing the border currently at an all-time high with more than 200 thousand people coming in per month. .

The Republican senators blamed the White House on these issues and pushed for border wall construction to resume and for programs such as the Migrant Protection Protocols, or Remain in Mexico.

“They don't care about the 3 million migrants encountered at the border during the last year and a half,” Sen. Cornyn said. “They apparently don't care about the young women and girls who are sexually assaulted en route. They apparently don't care about the migrants who die."

Advocates are concerned conservative leaders aren't seeing the full picture.

"The crisis that we see is that asylum seekers are not able to make their claim at a port of entry,” Adriana Quiroga with the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services said. “This is within their right - protected by international law - to seek asylum. What we're seeing more and more is that migrants are turned to the hands of danger and returned to Mexico, returned to re-experience these traumatic events."

When reached for comment, the office of Congressman Vicente Gonzalez issued the following statement:

“Democrats are in Washington getting things done. I co-founded the bipartisan Border Tech Caucus to ensure our border patrol officers have modern resources to protect our country. The House has passed immigration legislation that is now sitting in the Senate because Republicans would rather obstruct than have actual results. They are once again using the Rio Grande Valley as a political backdrop for campaigning, thinking residents are naive. They clearly overplayed their card, insulting local law enforcement and Border security personal while underestimating the people of our region.”

The visiting senators said they'll fight for the policies of the last administration.
