WESLACO – A Rio Grande Valley mother is urging teachers to educate themselves about autism.

Many parents who have children with autism feel that teachers don’t always understand how to help these children.

"I didn't know how important it was, because I had never experienced it first-hand. I couldn't tell you what autism looked like or what to look for, or what a special needs student required,” says IDEA Public Schools Assistant Principal Selena Ortiz.

She now has two children also diagnosed with autism. She says special education training isn’t readily available for teachers meant to instruct general education classes.

Ortiz is one of about 100 other public school employees who are attending a free training which is taking place on Saturday.

Four therapists from The Shape of Behavior will donate their time to teach local teachers.
