A Weslaco truck driver is about to hit four million consecutive safe miles.

Jose Luis Jaramillo works for H-E-B and is scheduled to hit the milestone on Wednesday.

"As long as I'm healthy, I'll keep on trucking, it's just, I just love driving," Jaramillo said.

For almost 25 years, Jaramillo has walked through the door, used his locker, greeted his colleagues, and grabbed his truck keys at the transportation terminal in Weslaco.

He's a driver for H-E-B and on his route he's seen it all through South Texas.

"That's the advantage that we have as drivers, because we have the height, so we can see way ahead," Jaramillo said.

He had 10 years of experience as a driver before he started driving for the grocery store chain in 1990.

"Days and nights and weekends, but finally with seniority, you get to pick a run you really, really like, but I did work 25 years night shift because of the seniority," Jaramillo said.

Now, he drives back and forth from Weslaco to San Antonio.

"It is hard for the family that stays behind, it's so many hours, at least 15 hours away from home," Jaramillo said. "That's what's awesome about my wife, she does everything she can so I don't have to stress on the road."

To keep himself safe on the road, he starts every drive by checking oil levels, tires, and mirrors.

"Every day is a challenge, but you adjust, it just doesn't faze me," Jaramillo said.

There are 70 drivers at the transportation terminal in Weslaco. Jaramillo is in a league of his own, even as an H-E-B Hall of Fame driver member.

"First million miles, December 8, 2000. I hit my 2 million miles on Oct. 8, 2008, and I hit my 3 million miles on Jan. 31, 2017," Jaramillo said. "Back in '96, I won nationals in the food industry side and I went again back in 2013."

His colleagues agree.

"Yes, yes, we need him on our driving force, definitely," H-E-B Weslaco Transportation Team Leader Ana Boyzo said. "It's a big accomplishment and we're very proud of him and he represents H-E-B very good."

That's because he's about to have 4 million consecutive safe miles on the road.

"I guess the miles add up really quick, quicker than you think and before you know it, you're there, but I don't think about it, I just drive," Jaramillo said.

On Wednesday, June 24, Jaramillo will be the company's fourth driver ever to achieve it and the first from the Rio Grande Valley to do it.

"I know I'm going to be all by myself," Jaramillo said.

His favorite part is the connection he gets with the community. His work extends to help during times of need too.

"Helping out, helping out at hurricane reliefs," Jaramillo said.

And small gestures to put a smile on those around him.

"We don't have the string anymore, but I pretend I got a string and I go like this and the kids love it," Jaramillo said.

A love the San Benito native related to himself.

"I would make that honking sign for the trucks to honk and they always told me to behave but I don't know I've always wanted to drive 18-wheelers and you just get on a truck and it's you and the road," Jaramillo said.

A road he plans to continue to drive on for a few years more.

Jaramillo says this wouldn't be possible without the help of his family, coworkers and friends. He also credits the support from H-E-B through all these years.

On Wednesday, there will be a special ceremony for his milestone. It will start in Donna and end at the Weslaco transportation terminal.
