BROWNSVILLE – Crews in Brownsville are closer to taking apart a World War II ship.

The world’s first floating nuclear power plant, STURGIS, is officially free of toxins, including radiation.

The ship was built in the 40’s but was purposed for military and civilian use decades later.

KRGV’s Sierra Pizarro spoke with Baltimore District Project Manager Brenda Barber with the Army Corp of Engineers.

She says they contracted a company, APTIM, to take out the vessel’s nuclear reactor, over 1.5 million pounds of radioactive waste and more than 600,000 pounds of lead.

Once the removal of asbestos is complete, she will be stripped down by March of next year.
