A fourth death was reported in connection to a fungal meningitis outbreak in Matamoros, located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, that’s linked to two clinics there.
The outbreaks at the K3 Clinica and Riverside Surgical Center were initially reported last month.
A Cameron County resident is among the dead, officials said.

Texas health officials are monitoring 148 people who underwent cosmetic surgeries at the clinics in 2023, but they’ve yet to show symptoms.
Officials said that could change.
“We expect that those people overtime will progress to a more symptomatic infection, and the infection will have more time to cause damage in the central nervous system and probably the vessels if the treatment started later rather than earlier,” UT Health RGV infectious disease specialist Dr. Jose Campo-Maldonado said.

Doctors are urging anyone who underwent surgery at either of those clinics in 2023 to get tested for fungal meningitis.
Symptoms include fever, headache, stiff neck and nausea.
