1 Dead in Single-Vehicle Crash South of Mercedes

UPDATE (10:00 P.M.): Authorities say the evidence so far shows the SUV was speeding and didn't make the turn. They say the driver was not being chased.

Some people in the car fled but were later apprehended.

Right now, there is no word on the citizenship of any of the victims.

The investigation is now being handled by Homeland Security Investigations.

MERCEDES – One person is dead after a rollover crash south of Mercedes.

Multiple agencies, including the Mercedes Fire Department, Department of Public Safety and Border Patrol, responded to a call near the intersection of Baseline and PFC Pedro Martinez roads Monday afternoon.

Border Patrol says one of their cameras near the river captured 14 people being loaded into the SUV at around 2 p.m.

Agents say they dispatched units to the area. When those agents arrived they found the vehicle crashed.

The agency tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS 15 people were in the vehicle at the time of the accident. One person died as a result of the crash.

Several others were sent to area hospitals by air and by ambulance.
