WESLACO – Credit card skimmers can swipe your information the second you slide your card into one. They take your personal information and store it.

Usually using a Bluetooth setting in the skimmer makes it easier for the person stealing your information to retrieve it.

A card skimmer itself is actually a device that all of the information is downloaded on. Card skimming in general is described as the gathering of information from credit cards.

"I knew about them, but I didn't know they were in the Valley yet," said Damaris Ochoa, who regularly rents movies from Redbox.

Law enforcement said that the credit card skimmers can be anywhere you use your credit or debit card. This includes the gas station, ATM's and movie rental stations such as Redbox.

However, there is a way you can spot a skimmer just about anywhere.

By using a smartphone, anyone can spot a skimmer and avoid becoming a victim.

All you have to do is go to your settings and under Bluetooth, enable it. If you see a pairing that comes up as a strange series of number and letters, that is more than likely a skimmer.

Discovering a skimmer means you should notify an employee of that establishment and local law enforcement.

It is important that you do not pair with this device. Pairing with the device can give the skimmer access to the personal information on your phone.

Other ways you can spot a credit card skimmer are by looking for anything out of the ordinary at the pump and monitoring your bank account weekly.
