WESLACO – The number of people dead due to multiple fires burning in California now stands at 80.

KRGV’s Trason Bragg spoke with a survivor of the Woolsey fire, Jordan Herbert. He and his wife live in Topanga Canyon, a community nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains.

He says as a precaution they left home hours before county officials ordered a mandatory evacuation for the area. Both monitored the progress of the fires for the next couple of days.

“Fire to the north and fire to the west, and it was all around Topanga Canyon,” he explains. “And the question for the week that we were out of the home was whether or not it would reach the ridge and enter Topanga Canyon.”

Herbert says he and his wife were able to move back into their home but are aware that their “good fortune was someone else’s bad fortune.”

In total, the Woolsey fire charred over 98,000 acres, consumed 1,500 structures and claimed three lives.
