UPDATE (7/22): Investigators ruled out electrical issues as the cause of the fire, but believe it's likely due to improperly discarded smoking material.

"A lot of times they put them in cans or just in some kind of, in this case, it was a pot with dirt in it. But the winds were pretty strong yesterday, so you can't always be assured that once you put it out, that it's out," said Hector Bennett, a McAllen fire captain.

Bennett says you can always want to double-check your cigarette is completely out.

The fire captain recommends using proper ash trays or sealed containers.
