BROWNSVILLE – A Rio Grande Valley deputy who was shot on the job is telling his story.

He’s now helping to train others after a knock on the door almost turned deadly for him.

In 2007, deputy Angel Perez was delivering a warrant to a man wanted out of state – he was accused of killing two law enforcement officers. The man shot Perez in the face.

Perez now holds the position of Cameron County SWAT Team Leader.

“It did cause some damage, but I was able to recover and get back on my feet,” says Perez. “I wouldn't like for any of the officers or members of the SWAT team to go through the same thing that I have. It's really hard.”

KRGV’s Sierra Pizarro explains Perez is using this comeback to lead a new training aimed to prepare those who handle dangerous situations, such as delivering a warrant.

Deputies from multiple divisions within the county, as well as local police officers, train 16 hours out of every month.
