WESLACO – The Department of Homeland Security is warning residents about crooks presenting themselves as immigration officials.

DHS says callers are altering the caller ID system to make it appear as if the phone calls are coming from DHS headquarters or the DHS Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Office.

Local resident Catherine Rosales says she gets these calls often.

Rosales says these callers will ask her for personal information.

"They’ll also ask me for my card, my car insurance, medical insurance," she says.

The Code Rio Grande Valley positions director, Mario Lopez, says altering caller ID is a growing trend.

Lopez says once the caller ID is changed, it’s almost impossible to track down.

He says these callers get residents' phone numbers through the Internet.

“When you're online and you're filling out applications, even though Facebook and LinkedIn, where you have your number visible. Companies are able to grab your phone number from there, or scammers,” says Lopez.

He says the best thing to do is ask to be put on the ‘do not call’ list and never give out personal information over the phone.
