MISSION – Multiple Rio Grande Valley law enforcement responded to a capsized boat early Thursday afternoon near Chimney Park.

As agents arrived, they witnessed several people onboard a small boat navigating back to Mexico.

The boat then capsized and the entire group became distressed but managed to cling to the overturned boat.  Agents immediately dialed 9-1-1 for assistance.

Two good Samaritans on their own boat saw the incident and began to assist with the rescue.

With the good Samaritans’ permission, agents boarded the private boat and began to ferry the subjects to the U.S. side a few at a time in order to avoid the boat from capsizing.

The Mission Police Department said people in the country illegally were aboard the boat.

A total of 14 subjects were rescued with four of them requiring additional medical attention by the Mission Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services personnel. Their condition is unknown.

Customs and Border Protections is investigating the incident.
