BROWNSVILLE – The Eagles soared past their district foes in 32-6A with a perfect 5-0 record. It’s the school’s first district title since 2009.

“The atmosphere at school has been a lot better,” said Hanna football coach Mark Guess. “You know they always say you have a better school year when you have a successful football season. We’re very happy to be able to contribute to that.”

Last year’s season ended with a playoff appearance, but they lost in the first round to Vela.

“We had been working for this since last year,” said senior Aaron Frausto. “We lost in the first round of the playoffs, we started the day right after and we were going for that gold ball.”

The district champs will have their hands full trying to score in this year’s first round against Weslaco East.

The Wildcats have one of the Valley’s best defenses. They’ve held five of their opponents to six points or less.

“They haven’t gone three rounds so many years in a row for not having a good defense, because they definitely win championships,” said Guess of Weslaco East. “Their defensive line is very good and linebackers fly to the football.”

“We’re as confident as we can be, for sure, but we don’t drink our own kool-aid,” said Frausto. “We make sure we do the right things and do things right and we’ll be successful out there on the field.”

The Eagles are looking to win their first playoff game since 1996.

Friday night’s game kicks off at 7:30 pm in Brownsville.
