UPDATE (8/31): Cameron County authorities confirmed the identity of a body discovered in a Laureles field.

Sheriff Omar Lucio said several tattoos in the body helped determine the body was that of 26-year-old Teresa Perez. Her family reported her missing back on Aug. 20.

The sheriff said the cause of the death is still unknown. It could be a week before they get those results.

The case is being investigated as a homicide, according to Lucio.

"We treat it as a homicide. Anytime we find a body like that, we treat it as a homicide, and that means that we try to preserve all the evidence possible. If it's determined later something else happened well that's it, but we don't want to go back after a month or two or three and find out that it had been a homicide after all," Lucio stated.

Investigators believe the woman may have died elsewhere, but her body was taken to that field.

Anyone with information on the case can call the sheriff's department at 956-350-5551.
