An invasive plant that was gone for years is back on the rise — and it's choking up the Rio Grande.

Efforts to kill the South American Water Hyacinth aquatic plant haven’t worked, and it’s impeding the flow of the river.

"It clogs up your intakes as well," Hidalgo County Irrigation District No. 2 General Manager Sonny Hinojosa said. "We need to address it quickly before it gets worse

The district supplies water for farmers and people at home, and Hinojosa said he worries about the impact of the invasive plant while water supply levels in Valley reservoirs are already low.

The Hyacinth is growing and slowing down how quickly the water can move. It’s growing a lot more south of Donna and Progreso, and east towards Brownsville.

Previously, the U.S. Department of Agriculture used bugs to fight back against the plant. Now the USDA is looking to Mexico to control the problem with the usage of a biocontrol fungus, according to USDA research entomologist John Goolsby.
