PHARR – A 5% tariff increase may be implemented in a week for all products coming into the U.S. from Mexico.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS reached out to Rio Grande Valley importer Aaron Acosta to learn about a non-tariff option for popular produce.

Acosta is in corporate relations for Villita Avocados.

He says the company started harvesting avocados in Peru about four years ago; the fruit is shipped directly to the U.S.

“We're always looking at options; sometimes a different country of origin can help reduce cost and volumes when there's limited availability," says Acosta.

He explains some companies may feel the impact and unlike many other importers, the tariffs will hurt the consumer.

Alvida Martinez, a customer, questions what will happen since she’s on a fixed income.

"I may not be able to buy certain things you know like vegetables and stuff like that because I live on a budget and it's kind of hard,” says Martinez.

Acosta says he hopes the tariffs don’t start, nor continue.
