HARLINGEN – The U.S. Marine Corps is correcting the identity of one of the Marines depicted in the iconic scene from World World II: The Battle of Iwo Jima.

It’s an image that resonates across the Rio Grande Valley; one of the marines is from Weslaco.

The original photo was transformed into a monument, which is displayed at the Arlington National Cemetery, but the original casting lives in Harlingen at the Marine Military Academy.

With the help of five other marines, Corporal Harlon Block planted a flag pole signaling the mountain is secure.

Block was originally misidentified until 1947, as well as Harold Schultz until June 2016 and now, Harold Keller, who was misidentified until this week.
