WESLACO – Tamaulipas officials said people being deported from the U.S. are being kidnapped, robbed and extorted on the streets of Reynosa.

A Honduran couple told CHANNEL 5 NEWS how cartel smugglers wait for people to leave the migrant shelter so they can rob or kidnap them.

Ricardo Calderon Macias leads the Tamaulipas Institute for Migrants. He said the program helps people who are usually deported get back to their hometowns.

All the people they’ve been helping lately are Mexican citizens deported from the U.S. Calderon said it’s his goal to get them home safely.

“This is very important. We’re going to take you to the house for the immigrants on buses. Make sure that you stay inside the bus station and go to the place I told you to go,” he said.

Mexican state officials meet deported nationals in the middle of the international bridges. Calderon said it’s dangerous for people with no place to go to be out on the streets, especially at night.

“We’ve heard of many sad cases of immigrants from Central America and are deported at the border. These people become victims of kidnappings, thefts and extortion,” he said

The migrant program helps get people deported from the U.S. get Mexican IDs. Many have been in the U.S. so long that they no longer have proof that they are Mexican citizens.

The program also helps them get a bus ticket home.

“Many of the one’s who return come without money, without the means of even getting a plate of food,” Calderon said.

He said those who decide to stay in Reynosa are in danger and should be cautious.
