MCALLEN – Business owners from the Rio Grande Valley are wondering what the impact of a tariff imposed on goods from Mexico will have on them.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS spoke to the owner of Amore Produce in McAllen, Carlos Ayala.

He says a 5% increase will impact his business negatively.

"It does affect our business, when we cross products because it takes longer and you have to do more paper work and not everyone is going to be able to pay because they can’t afford it," says Ayala.

Ayala tells us an increase of tariffs on products coming from Mexico means an increase of prices for all food in the U.S.

Rio Grande Valley Chamber of Commerce President Sergio Contreras agrees with Ayala.

Contreras says trade with Mexico brings a lot of money to the Valley.

Ayala explains they can’t prepare for the situation.

"In the end we have to pay for it and go with the flow but the most affected is the customer," says Ayala.

President Donald Trump stated the tariffs will begin on June 10 and warned those percentages may rise.
