As the single mother of seven children in Monte Alto, San Juana Aguirre-Ochoa said money is tight.

“I do have a job, but the pay is not enough for me to maintain my whole family,” Aguirre-Ochoa said.

Aguirre-Ochoa said she has fallen behind on rent. With the colder weather, her children need something she can't afford right now — new jackets.

“My kids have jackets, but it is not enough to protect them from the cold,” Aguirre-Ochoa said. “They are too thin, and they are in sweaters."

Aguirre-Ochoa said this need for new jackets comes every winter. Her children attend Monte Alto ISD, and a social worker there told her about KRGV’s Tim's Coats campaign.

KRGV is celebrating 43 years of Tim's Coats by asking for a monetary donation to purchase new coats for families in need. Funds are being collected through Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2025. 

The purchased coats will go to The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities, who will distribute the coats to those in need free of charge based on criteria set by the organizations. 

Aguirre-Ochoa’s children will be among those who will receive new jackets thanks to Tim’s Coats.

“These jackets are going to be important to my kids more than ever. I am very thankful that we are going to get some help because they have a big heart,” Aguirre-Ochoa said.

This will be the first time Aguirre-Ochoa’s children receive new coats from the drive. It means she won't have to worry about her children staying warm when the temperatures drop.

“I am going to be happy more than ever, especially during this time of year, “Aguirre-Ochoa said. “It is the best Christmas present."

All donations will be collected by KRGVCares, a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Therefore, your donation is 100% tax-deductible.
