WESLACO – President Trump has not confirmed whether he would go through with his plans to close the southern border.

On Friday, he prompted those along the border to prepare:

"Massive caravans walking right through Mexico, so Mexico's tough. They can stop them but they choose not to. Now, they're going to stop them and if they don't stop them, we're closing the border."

The shutdown would put a stop to trade and could impact the economy in the Rio Grande Valley.

The spokesman for the National Border Patrol Council, Chris Cabrera, says they are being overrun by people crossing into the country illegally and it’s impacting Border Patrol’s tasks.

The Hidalgo County judge, the Starr County judge and the Cameron County judge believe this will have a significant impact on the Valley’s economy.
