HARLINGEN – The American Red Cross says they are in need of volunteers as hurricane season approaches.

The Rio Grande Valley chapter tells CHANNEL 5 NEWS they still have volunteers assisting victims from Hurricane Harvey.

It's a disaster Betty Hicks, a volunteer with the American Red Cross, says she will never forget.

"It actually was indescribable," she says.

Hicks says she was caught in the middle of the chaos when Harvey made landfall.

"I stayed in Houston for 15 days, then I was released because usually, that's what they ask you to come out for. I was released for about three days, came home, decided that we still were needed and so we were sent back to Corpus Christi. We were in Corpus Christi for 44 days to help with that," said Hicks.

She says to this day, she still goes to help victims in Harvey-affected areas. She recently returned from Houston.

"I did go out in some of the areas which were hit so I could see where the damage had been, and got to talk to a few more people who had damage done to their homes," said Hicks.

Andy Treat, Red Cross workforce engagement manager, says the local Red Cross chapter is looking to get more volunteers like Hicks.

"If we could bring people in now and get them all trained and set up it would be much more productive," he says. 

Treat said when it came to Harvey there was a great need for volunteers to prepare before the hurricane made landfall. He says this was especially the case when it came to helping with shelters.

"We have to be prepared to handle the people that would be displaced here in the Valley for 72 hours," says Treat.

He adds other volunteers the chapter is in need of are those who are able to help victims out in the field for several days.

Treat says since Harvey, they've been working to make sure they are prepared in case a similar event hits the Valley.
