WESLACO – The Texas Department of Transportation is linking rock-chipped windows to debris that flies out from unsecured truckloads.

Spokesperson for TxDOT, Octavio Saenz says they spend $2 million sweeping more than 6,000 miles of lanes twice a month; accounting for Zappata, Jim Hogg, Brooks, Kennedy, Willacy, Cameron, Hidalgo, and Starr Counties.

"Even though we do sweep twice a month, if there's any time that there's an item on the road that is a hazard or safety concern, call local law-enforcement. They're able to call us and we'll go and immediately remove it," says Saenz.

He says all of the construction material that’s being transported throughout the Rio Grande Valley for different types of projects makes an impact on the quantity of debris on the road.

Residents can report a rock-chip claim on the TxDOT website if the chip is connected to a TxDOT construction problem on state road.

Aditionally, the Department of Public Safety says drivers with unsecured truckloads can face fines up to $500.
