A 29-year-old San Juan man is jailed on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child after meeting the victim through social media, according to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

Marco Antonio Mejia was arrested on Thanksgiving Day shortly after 12:30 a.m. after he was found with the child in his vehicle during a traffic stop near the intersection of Monte Cristo Road and 83rd Street near Edinburg, according to a news release.

The male child was sitting in the front passenger seat.

“During the investigation and interviews on scene, the deputy was able to determine that the juvenile was a child and a victim of a sexual assault,” the news release stated. “Preliminary findings indicate the suspect met the victim through the social media platform Snapchat.”

Mejia was booked into the Hidalgo County jail on a $1 million bond and remains in custody as of Monday, records show.

In the news release, Hidalgo County Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra urged parents to monitor their children’s online activity.

“We encourage families to monitor social platforms closely and talk to their children about online safety,” Guerra said in a statement.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with any information regarding the case is urged to contact the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office at 956-383-8114.
