MCALLEN – Hidalgo County officials said aging equipment caused a security incident at the courthouse last week.

An issue with relay switches and electronics affected an area controlled by the sheriff’s office last Friday.

Hidalgo County Commissioner’s Court executive officer Valde Guerra said the equipment’s age continues to cause operational problems.

“It’s just a constant struggle at the courthouse with respect to issues that come up every single day and our ability to address those issues, so that we can have the courthouse or the functions of the courthouse continue,” he said.

Guerra said the impact was minimal and was corrected earlier this week.

No other details about the incident were released due to security concerns.

A new courthouse is in the works for Hidalgo County. Construction for the project is not expected until 2018.
