Tactical Gear Widely Available for Public Purchase
MCALLEN – The suspect in the deadly shooting in Sutherland Springs was reported wearing tactical gear and a ballistic vest, items which are all legal to obtain.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS stopped by the Green Beret in McAllen which sells tactical gear.
While this equipment is legal to buy, owner Marcus Silva told us there are some cases when they chose not to sell.
"A law abiding citizen can buy a bullet proof vest," said Silva.
He first opened up his business back in 1978, where they sell army surplus supplies.
While it is legal for anyone to get their hands on tactical gear, Silva said in his store they mostly sell them to security guards and law enforcement officers.
"The small towns where the cities don't have the budget to pay for them," said Silva.
While this stuff is available to the public, Silva said in his store there are some cases when they chose not to sell these items to a customer.
"There's an issue where people are looking for more than one vest," said Silva.
Silva said those looking to buy in bulk by themselves can raise some red flags.
Another thing they monitor closely is their items which are marked "police."
"Patches, t-shirts, we need a letter head or we need to talk to the city or see a badge," said Silva.
While these items are also legal to obtain Silva said he doesn't feel comfortable selling these items to someone who isn't in law enforcement.
Silva said in the end it's up to the seller to decide who they sell too.
