EDINBURG – A trial date was set in a Hidalgo County murder case.

Monica Melissa Patterson appeared in court Monday for a status hearing.

Patterson and co-defendant Angel Mario Garza are charged with murder for the death of 96-year-old Martin Knell.

An autopsy revealed Knell died of asphyxiation.

According to criminal complaint, Patterson and Garza told Knell’s caretaker to lie to authorities about what happened moments before he was found dead at his home in January of 2015.

Patterson’s trial is now scheduled for August 14.
