EDINBURG – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Police Department issued a warning Tuesday evening alerting students and staff to a scam.

Fraudulent raffle tickets were being sold on campus disguised as a good cause.

This incident not only concerned law enforcement, but the UTRGV School of Medicine whose name was being used.

"We were notified internally that there were some raffle tickets being sold using the (UTRGV) School of Medicine name. So we went ahead and contacted the local chapter for the American Cancer Society just to verify; see what they knew. Obviously, they confirmed that they weren't aware,” said Sofia Hernandez, Chief of Staff for the UTRGV School of Medicine.

The raffle tickets were circulating for at least a week.

The statement issued tells students and staff to not buy the fraudulent tickets if they come across them.

"When somebody is using our name out in the community inappropriately for illegal purposes we take that very seriously," said Hernandez.

Hernandez says students should keep an eye out for a logo placement. The logo ensures the event or fundraiser is legitimate.

UTRGV Police Chief Raul Munguia urges anyone who purchased a raffle ticket and fell victim to this scam, to notify them.

The letter that was sent out to students and faculty can be read below.
