UPDATE (3:00 p.m.): The jury in the trial of a woman accused in a deadly hit-and-run accident found her not guilty.

The jury came back from deliberations in Marisa Govea Hernandez’s trial after 1:30 p.m. She was accused of running over Mary Tipton in April 2015 and fleeing the scene.

The jury found her not guilty.

BROWNSVILLE - A jury is currently deliberating the fate of a Brownsville woman accused of running over a woman and leaving the scene of the crime.

The jury was dismissed at 10:30 Friday morning for deliberations. If convicted, Marisa Govea Hernandez could face two to 10 years for the death of Mary Tipton.

Before being dismissed from the courtroom, the jury heard closing arguments from attorneys on both sides.

The defense told jurors the incident was accidental and could’ve happened to anyone. They stressed Hernandez did go back to search the area of the hit-and-run, even if the video to prove it was deleted.

State prosecutors focused their attention on the timeline of events. They reminded the jury Tipton was hit at 7:11 p.m., and the first 911 call about the incident wasn’t made till almost an hour and a half later.

They also asked the jury to keep in mind that Hernandez didn’t immediately stop to render aid, as the law requires.

The packed courtroom had plenty of support from both sides. Hernandez’s family dressed in white to show their solidarity and support.

The defendant remained in the courtroom while the jury deliberated.
