UPDATE (2/21): The McAllen Police Department charged a 20-year-old woman with leaving a child in a vehicle. 

Police identified the woman as Diana Laura Barrios of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. The female child was only 4-days old. CPS was notified and the child was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation.

MCALLEN – McAllen police arrested a woman after she left her infant unattended inside a vehicle. The baby was placed in child protective custody.

McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said the mother parked outside Walgreens near the intersection of 10th and Trenton streets.

 “We were called to a local business where by a report was that a child had been left in the car, and we did find an infant locked in the car,” he said.

Rodriguez said she left the car’s ignition off. The baby remained inside for about 10 minutes, according to witnesses.

The vehicle where the child was found was parked at the scene Monday afternoon.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS wanted to know how high temperatures would go without air conditioning. In exactly 10 minutes, temperatures rose to 92.7 degrees.

Pediatrician Dr. Livania Zavala-Spinetti explained situations like these can affect a child.

“The infant can start to become dizzy, he becomes sleepy. Then of course, he’s going to fall asleep very deep,” she said. “They can even go into seizures and they can stop breathing and as a consequence, of course, they can die.”

In extreme heat, those consequences could happen even quicker.

“In the summer months it’s usually as short as 15 minutes,” she said.

Dr. Zavala-Spinetti said children dying in hot cars is something that happens way too often.

CPS was notified and is conducting an investigation.
