NEAR MCALLEN – A Central American woman said her fears of returning home outweighs the fear of deportation.

Honduran native Cindy Ramirez crossed the Rio Grande Tuesday with her son. Neither of them have documents.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS met with her on the other side of the border fence in Hidalgo County. We wanted to know if she knew what was happening with the immigration policy in the U.S.

“We are afraid, but realistically the situation is very difficult in our country. I have no choice,” she said. “I didn’t want to waste any more time in Honduras.”

Ramirez said she left her country for her children’s safety. She’s also 37 weeks pregnant.

“There is a lot of crime. The gangs they come and take children to join them,” she said.

Her journey from Central America started more than two weeks ago. She was able to cross into the U.S. after 20 days of being on the road, but was stopped when she encountered the border fence.

Ramirez asked us if we could call Border Patrol. We waited with her until they arrived. She carried a piece of paper that could lead her to f amiliar territory.

“I’m going to go see my father but he doesn’t know I’m coming. I don’t know where he is, but I have to call him,” she said.

Despite Tuesday’s announcement, Ramirez said she’s hopeful her son and her unborn baby will be allowed to stay in the U.S.

When asked if she ever considered trying to come to the U.S. legally, Ramirez said she had no idea how to.
