A man shot a woman Saturday in Mercedes, according to police Chief Dagoberto Chavez.

The shooting occurred at about 2:50 p.m. Saturday on the 100 block of East 8th Street, Chavez said. The woman was taken to a local hospital for surgery.

Chavez said the man is believed to be the woman's boyfriend.
