At San Isidro High School, 17-year-old Estrella Martinez does it all.
Estrella is currently ranked second in her class. She serves as student council president, FCCLA vice president, is a member of the National Honor Society, and competes in UIL academics.
“Since elementary or middle school, I’ve always wanted to be involved in things,” Estrella said. “I prefer being busy than being sitting down and not doing anything. You can ask my parents, you can ask my siblings, anybody around the school they're going to be like ‘yeah she's very active in everything.’"
Outside the classroom, Estrella shines in volleyball, cross-country, and as cheer captain.
Estrella made history in her sophomore year as her school's first female athlete to qualify for state cross-country.
Estrella said her motivation comes from family, especially her sister, who battled a brain tumor at a young age.
“Seeing the struggles she went through and seeing how she overcame them is inspiring to me,” Estrella said. “Her telling me to push myself means a lot, she's always been my day one basically."
Estrella has faced her own challenges. She was born prematurely, and doctors told her family she might not walk or talk.
Those early obstacles helped shape her dream of becoming a physical therapist.
“That's why I chose physical therapy, to give back to my mom and prove to everybody else that I can be the better version of myself,” Estrella said. “That's why I push myself every day."
Estrella's teachers say her drive and determination makes her a standout student and good role model.
Estrella's dedication and hard work makes her this week's Student of the Week.
For the next 10 weeks, Channel 5 News will be highlighting students who shine in and out of the classroom.
The students have already been selected.
