WESLACO – Brandon Figueroa is getting ready for an eight-round contest against Monterrey native Carola Proa Saturday. It’ll be the main event of an eight-fight card taking place at the Mercedes Livestock Show Grounds.

“He’s 32 years old so you know he’s a tough veteran,” said Figueroa. “He’s fought undefeated prospects and he’s looked good against them. I expect a great fight.”

Figueroa holds a 13-0 record and he believes Saturday’s bout will be his toughest to date.

“The record he has and the opposition he’s fought. They’re not any pushovers and he’s definitely not a pushover.”

Eric Molina looks to rack up another win in a bout against Lance Gauch, who has won three of his last four fights.

“He’s got more rhythm with wins than I do so he’s definitely somebody that’s coming in,” said Molina. “He’s ready to win the fight so I got to be ready.”

The Harwell Middle School teacher will fight in honor of Javier Martinez, a student with an aggressive form of cancer.

“Javi is a kid that’s a good friend of mine, “said Molina. “He reached out and we got connected about two years ago. He’s hung out with our team. We’re all behind him and we’re praying for him. This fight for me…I just have him in my mind and in my heart.”

Eight fights are scheduled for Saturday’s event in Mercedes.
