BROWNSVILLE – More than $1 million in delinquent business property tax is owed to Cameron County, according to the county’s tax assessor-collector.

Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office and partners with Linebarger Goggan Blair and Sampson law offices served tax warrants to delinquent businesses on Thursday.

Yzaguirre told CHANNEL 5 NEWS that $1,037,800 is owed by 350 delinquent businesses.

Six properties were served Thursday. Within the next two weeks, they plan to serve more.

Law partner John Guevara said when these small percentage of business owners don’t pay, it affects everybody.

“Roads, services, fire department, police protection,” Guevara explained. "Those individuals that don't pay or those businesses, that don't pay, really cause a hardship on the county, the city, the school districts. They need this money. They've budgeted for it."

Tax bills were sent out in October, as well as two additional reminders that tax payments were due before they became delinquent on April 1st.

Guevara said his law office sent out two additional reminders after the accounts became delinquent.

Yzaguirre said they’ve already made contact with everyone they plan to serve with a warrant regarding a payment.

Property owners who refuse to pay will have their property seized and sold to satisfy taxes that are owed. Seized property may include cash on hand.
